Prince Dapo Abiodun, governor of Ogun State, has told labor unions and residents that his administration is working harder than ever to ease the hardships caused by the elimination of the state’s fuel subsidy.

As the labor unions staged a peaceful demonstration in front of the Governor’s Office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, the governor issued this announcement in response to their demands.

Abiodun, who was represented by Secretary to the State Government (SSG) Mr. Tokunbo Talabi, assured the people of the state that their welfare and well-being had always been a top priority for the state government, and that all available resources were being put toward making their lives easier, especially at the present time.

The state head highlighted some of the immediate measures put in place to cushion the effect of the fuel subsidy removal, including a cash palliative of N10,000 for each public servant and pensioner, approval of hazard allowance for all health and medical personnel, approval of peculiar allowance for public servants, and immediate release of promotion letters for 2021 and 2022).

He went on to say that his administration had approved immediate cash-backing for the quarterly payment of pensioners’ gratuities, that the modalities for the beginning of food palliatives to the vulnerable were in top gear, and that government ministries, departments, and agencies were to work out time off for 20 percent of their staff to mitigate the impact of the fuel price increase.

Now, we’re awaiting the outcomes of the Federal Government’s and the unions’ meeting. We can pick up where we left off as soon as a choice is made. The temporary hardships brought on by the elimination of fuel subsidies are not lost on us,” the governor said.

Chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) in Ogun State, Comrade Hammed Benco Ademola, and his counterpart in the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Comrade Akeem Lasisi, presented a letter to the governor outlining their demands, which included, among other things, the immediate implementation in good faith of the resolutions with labor congress jointly signed with government and TUC, the immediate reversal of all anti-poor policies of government on the recent hike in the price of food

They urged the state government to quickly implement their proposals in the best interests of all Texans.
