1. The John J Sweeney Scholarship

This special scholarship is named in honour of AFL-CIO President Emeritus John J. Sweeney, the son of Irish immigrants, who dedicated his life to advancing the well-being of working people, making outstanding contributions to working people which will live on for years to come.

The John J Sweeney Scholarship has a value of $20,000 and that is used towards the Scholar’s tuition fees for an MSc or LLM at Ulster University. This scholarship is generously supported by funds raised by the AFL-CIO, the American Labor community, business and civic organisations, and individuals.

Applicants should also note that any balance remaining may be used to purchase study materials/equipment, support course-related activities and/or in support of the Scholar’s living expenses and travel costs.

Eligibility

The John J Sweeney Scholarship supports students enrolled to study full-time on the following MSc or LLM at Ulster University:

  • MSc Peace and Conflict Studies
  • MSc Social Policy
  • LLM Human Rights Law and Transitional Justice
  • LLM Gender, Conflict and Human Rights
  • LLM Access to Justice
  • MSc Construction Management
  • MSc Management and Corporate Governance
  • MSc Manufacturing Management
  • MSc Business Development and Innovation

2. Talented Athlete Entry Scheme

The Talented Athlete Entry Scheme is meant to assist skilled young sports performers in gaining access to a quality education at Ulster University whilst attaining success at the highest levels within their chosen sport.

The Scheme recognises the sacrifice in time, effort and crucially – in examination performance – which may result from taking part in sport at the highest level. Under the Talented Athlete Entry Scheme, Ulster University allows a reduction in the grades required for entry to undergraduate courses.

It offers access to performance sport support services valued at over £500 including musculo-skeletal screening, physiotherapy, strength & conditioning programmes, testing & supervision, performance skills workshops and many other benefits.

Eligibility

To be considered eligible for the Talented Athlete Entry Scheme you must:

  • Participate in a sport recognised by Student Sport Ireland (SSI) and / or British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) through which opportunities exist for students to compete at Intervarsity level for Ulster University.
  • have been selected within the last 24 months to compete as a minimum at age group international, age group interprovincial or age group county level or above in line with the competitive structure of your chosen sport.
  • Be entering Ulster University to study on an undergraduate course from school leaver level.
  • Choose Ulster University as your ‘Firm’ course choice when making your application through the UCAS system.
  • Agree to represent Ulster University in your chosen sport throughout your undergraduate studies, subject to fitness and selection.

3. International Undergraduate Scholarship

Open to all new international (non-EU) entrants on the first year of a full-time undergraduate course delivered on one of our Northern Ireland campuses, commencing September 2023.

A scholarship worth about £2,000 is applied as discount to your annual tuition fee.

Eligibility

To be eligible:

  • You must be classified as an international, self-funding student paying the international tuition fee rate to qualify for this award.
  • You must also hold an offer for a full-time undergraduate programme delivered on one of our campuses in Northern Ireland (Belfast, Coleraine or Derry~Londonderry), commencing in September 2023 and meet any academic and/or English language conditions as stated in your offer letter.
  • Students applying to our International Foundation Programme, part-time or eLearning programmes, or to programmes delivered at our branch campuses (London or Birmingham) are not eligible for this award.

Please note you are only eligible for one discount or scholarship.
