The attacks on Christmas Eve that targeted the local councils of Barkin-Ladi and Bokkos in Plateau State have been denounced by the Northern Governors Forum, or NGF.
On behalf of the 19 governors in the northern regions of Nigeria, Inuwa Yahaya, the Chairman of the Forum and the Governor of Gombe State, denounced the attacks on Tuesday.
He called the attacks disgusting and horrible and offered the condolences of the Forum to the families and towns that were impacted, as well as to the Plateau government and people.
“It is depressing to learn that these attacks claimed over 100 lives and caused extensive property damage, particularly as people were getting ready for Christmas.”
Such violent activities are not only cowardly, but they also contradict the values of harmony and peaceful coexistence that our region promotes.
“We all need to put our communities’ peace and harmony first. Despite our disagreements, we must reaffirm our commitment to peaceful cohabitation and unity now more than ever.
“We need to come together as a team to uphold peace and security, and resist any kind of violence or divisions,” stated Yahaya in a Gombe statement released by his media assistant, Mr. Ismaila Uba-Misilli.
Yahaya praised Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang for his leadership in managing the situation following the attacks, promising that the Northern governors will stand with him in the face of hardship and collaborate to establish enduring peace in the state.
Yahaya also praised the security agencies in the region and pleaded with them to step up their efforts to protect people’s lives and property by being more watchful and acting quickly.
