It was unjust. 2010 Ballon d’Or winner I wasn’t ahead of Messi – Sneijder

Wesley Sneijder, a former attacking midfielder for Inter Milan, has maintained that it was unfair that Lionel Messi took home the 2010 Ballon d’Or instead of him.

In November of this year, Messi achieved a record-tying eighth Ballon d’Or victory.

The Argentine defeated players like Kylian Mbappe of Paris Saint-Germain and Erling Haaland of Manchester City to win the prize.

He won after guiding Argentina to a historic victory in the World Cup in Qatar in December of last year.

Following his lack of success at the club level in comparison to competitor Haaland, who set the Premier League’s record for seasonal goals scored and also won the treble with Man City, many questioned whether Messi was worthy of the 2023 Ballon d’Or.

Sneijder has now voiced his worries regarding the Ballon d’Or awarding 13 years ago, amid the debate surrounding the 2023 winner.

“I felt it was somewhat unjust that Messi took home the 2010 Ballon d’Or instead of me,” Sneijder remarked to AlHayah TV.

“Winning group trophies is what I like, even though I’m not the kind to cry over individual awards like the Ballon d’Or. The Champions League that I won is what I would pick if I had to choose between it and the Ballon d’Or. I’m thrilled with that title.

Under Jose Mourinho’s direction, Sneijder guided Inter Milan to a historic triple in 2010 by winning the Serie A, Coppa Italia, and Champions League.

The Dutchman made an impression on the global scene as well, leading the Netherlands to the World Cup final in South Africa before they were defeated 1-0 by Spain.

Messi defeated Sneijder, who at the time seemed to be the ideal contender for the Ballon d’Or.
