In Niger State, the National Population Commission (NPC) has begun the 2023/2024 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS).

Muhammad Dattijo Usman, the state’s federal commissioner of the commission, announced the start date at a news conference in Minna on Thursday.

The survey, according to the statement, intends to collect high-quality data on a wide range of critical indicators to enable evidence-based planning and resource allocation.

The primary indicators to be addressed in the survey, according to Usman, include fertility rate, maternal and child health, contraceptive use, childhood mortality, gender-related issues, nutrition, HIV/AIDS awareness, and others.

The information gathered will be used to assist mother and child health and family planning needs, allowing for evidence-based decision-making.

The effort aims to improve data collecting, analysis, and use capability while encouraging national ownership of the process.

He stated that the data gathered will be useful in identifying demographic and health-related basic social needs, developing equitable growth strategies, tackling social poverty, and harmonizing with national development strategies.

According to the Commissioner, the program is a collaborative effort including several ministries, including the Federal Ministry of Health, the National Bureau of Statistics, and the Federal Ministry of Women’s Affairs.

To ensure the survey’s success, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is providing both financial and technical assistance.
