Police receive complaints about a possible cover-up in the death of Chinyere Awuda, an Anambra woman.

The family of Miss Chinyere Awuda has asked the state commissioner of police, Aderemi Adeoye, to look into the circumstances of her death after she was found dead in a club house in Awka, Anambra State.

Clubgoers at the Cosmila Hotel allegedly attacked Awuda after he picked up money being sprayed on a celebrant. It was speculated that her body was dumped in a disused swimming pool.

Her father, Mr. Patrick Awuda, was represented by Rigota Chambers and claimed that the celebrant, the hotel, and some police officers were conspiring to cover up his daughter’s death.

The petition the family sent to the Commissioner of Police alleged that the investigating police officer of ‘B’ Division, where the case was being investigated, had been pressuring them into a settlement without acknowledging that their daughter had been brutally murdered and dumped in the empty pool.

After allegedly stealing from the revelers and fleeing the club, the hotel claimed Awuda made a fatal error when he stepped into the empty pool. The family stated, however, that she was covered with bruises when she was taken out of the water, and that they were prevented from taking photographs of the injuries by the police.

“The inability of the hotel management to provide a comprehensive CCTV video of what happened, both inside the club where the beating began and outside the club where the actual murder occurred, left more questions answered and uncovered,” the lawyers said on behalf of the family in the petition.

The B Division investigating officer, the suspects, and the hotel management were all trying to convince the deceased person’s relatives to settle out of court.

Therefore, we beseech you to exercise your good offices and oversee a complete investigation of the crime and its perpetrators.

For the interest of public morality, it is necessary to immediately secure the location of the aforementioned crime scene.

In order to prevent similar acts of violence in the future, authorities must “further arrest, detain, and prosecute all other suspects, as shown by the CCTV clip currently in police custody.”
