On Friday, the Supreme Court validated Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s election as Governor of Lagos State.

Justice Garba Lawal, who read the lead opinion, denied the appeal submitted by Mr Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, a candidate for the Labour Party (LP).

Earlier, Sanwo-Olu petitioned the Supreme Court to dismiss the appeals against his gubernatorial victory on February 25.

Rhodes-Vivour and the Peoples Democratic Party, together with their candidate, Abdulazeez Adediran, were disputing Sanwo-Olu’s election.

The LP sought the Supreme Court to rule that the March 18 election was marred by irregularities and noncompliance with the Electoral Act, and that Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat was ineligible to contest the race.

Similarly, Adediran filed 34 grounds for appeal, requesting that the Supreme Court overturn the decisions of the Lagos State Governorship Election Tribunal and the Court of Appeal.

However, Sanwo-Olu’s counsel, Nas Ogunsakin, informed the court that the applicants failed to offer evidence to back up their claims and that the witnesses they brought were incompetent.
