N585 million scandal: Bishop Oyedepo’s prayers should have made you set a good example – Omokri knocks Betta Edu

Reno Omokri, an activist, claims that Bishop David Oyedepo of Living Faith Church’s prayers should have made suspended Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation Betta Edu aware of the importance of setting a good example while in government.

According to Ebantel, President Bola Tinubu has suspended Edu for instructing the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation to pay N585.18 million into a private account owned by one Oniyelu Bridget, who is said to be the project Accountant, Grants for Vulnerable Groups in Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Lagos, and Ogun states.

Dr Oluwatoyin Madein, the Federation’s Accountant-General, defied Edu’s decision and refused to pay the requested amount.

Tinubu suspended Edu and directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the minister.

In response, Omokri stated that the Edu controversy was a wake-up call for Nigerians to separate politics and religion, and that competence should be the sole criterion for holding office.

Omokri commented on X: “The mere fact that Bishop Oyedepo prayed for you to become a minister should have made you more concerned of setting a good example. While no one is flawless, this current instance, combined with the Yes Daddy leaked audio controversy and the Bishop, serves as yet another reminder that religion and politics should not be mixed.

“Competence should be the sole requirement for high office. An irreligious individual who is competent is likely to outperform a religious person who is neither competent nor capable. We cannot pray for a better country while simultaneously praying for people to hold positions of authority for which they are unqualified.

“That is why China, a country that has wholly divorced all forms of religion from its politics, is feeding, equipping and building Nigeria, one of the most religious countries on Earth.”

In her statement, Edu said that Tinubu named her minister after Oyedepo prayed for her.

She revealed this at Shiloh, the annual programme of Living Faith Church in 2023.
